What is an Air Cooled Chiller?

ChillerOne air cooled chiller uses ambient air as the cooling medium and dissipates the heat generated by the system into the atmosphere through its own equipped fans and condensers. Therefore, it does not rely on an additional cooling water system.

Our air cooled chiller has a simple structure and is easy to install. It operates for cooling only with ambient air, achieving remarkable energy-saving effects. Its energy efficiency is usually lower than that of water-cooled units that require cooling towers.

Working Principle of Air Cooled Chiller

  • Step 1: After the refrigerant absorbs the heat of cold water in the evaporator, it turns into low-temperature and low-pressure steam. Then it enters the compressor and is compressed into high-temperature and high-pressure steam.
  • Step 2: When the high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant vapor enters the condenser, the fan forces the ambient air to flow through the condenser coil, taking away the heat of the refrigerant, causing it to cool and condense into a high-pressure, normal-temperature liquid.
  • Step 3: Subsequently, the high-pressure liquid refrigerant flows through the expansion valve, and its pressure and temperature drop sharply.
  • Step 4: The low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant wet vapor enters the evaporator, absorbs the heat of the cold water flowing through the evaporator, and evaporates into gas, thereby cooling the cold water. The cooled cold water is then transported by water pumps to various places that need refrigeration, forming a repetitive cycle process.

Components of Air Cooled Chiller

Compressor

The compressor provides power for the refrigeration cycle flow by compressing the low temperature and low pressure refrigerant vapor into a high temperature and high pressure state.

  • Screw Compressor: The screw compressor is a type of positive displacement compressor. When the motor drives the rotor to rotate, the refrigerant gas is captured, compressed and pushed towards the exhaust end between the rotor teeth and grooves, thus completing a continuous and smooth compression process.

It features a compact structure, smooth operation, long service life and good regulating performance, making it an ideal choice for medium to large cooling capacity air cooled chillers.

  • Scroll Compressor: The scroll compressor is composed of a stationary scroll and a moving scroll nested within each other. The moving scroll rotates translationally around the center of the stationary scroll driven by the motor, forming a sealed cavity between the two. As the moving vortex disk moves, the volume of the cavity continuously shrinks, continuously compressing the inhaled low-pressure refrigerant gas and pushing it towards the exhaust port.

It features a simple structure, extremely low noise and vibration, and high reliability. It is the most commonly used compressor type in small and medium-sized air cooled chillers.

Condenser

Condensers are usually composed of copper tubes and aluminum fins. When the high-temperature and high-pressure refrigerant flows through its internal pipes, the condenser fan will drive the ambient air to the outside of the finned tubes, taking away the heat of the refrigerant and causing it to cool and condense, transforming from high-pressure gas into high-pressure liquid.

Condenser Fan

The condenser fan provides the forced convection cooling airflow required by the condenser. It conveys ambient air to the condenser through powerful ventilation, and then this air will carry away the heat carried by the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

Evaporator

Evaporators are usually of shell and tube structure. The low-temperature and low-pressure liquid refrigerant from the expansion valve flows in the pipes of the evaporator, while the water that needs to be cooled flows outside the pipes. The refrigerant absorbs the heat of water and evaporates into a gaseous state, thereby forcibly lowering the temperature of the flowing liquid and continuously providing chilled water to external devices.

Expansion Valve

The expansion valve is typically located between the condenser and the evaporator. It can reduce the pressure of the high-pressure, normal-temperature liquid refrigerant from the condenser into a low-temperature, low-pressure, mist-like mixture that is easy to evaporate. In addition, it automatically adjusts the flow of refrigerant entering the evaporator based on the superheat at the end of the evaporator, ensuring that the refrigerant is fully and efficiently utilized within the evaporator. This not only avoids a decrease in refrigeration efficiency due to insufficient flow but also prevents liquid hammer damage to the compressor caused by excessive flow.

Drying Filter

The drying filter is usually installed on the liquid pipe between the outlet of the condenser and the inlet of the expansion valve. Its interior is filled with desiccant and filters to adsorb and remove trace amounts of moisture and solid impurities that may be present in the refrigerant, preventing impurities from clogging the expansion valve, which ensures the safe and reliable operation of the entire air cooled chiller.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Air Cooled Chillers

Advantages

  • Simple System: ChillerOne air cooled chillers do not rely on complex cooling water systems such as cooling towers and cooling water pumps. Their system composition is simple and installation is convenient, and the cost is usually lower than that of water cooled chillers.
  • Space-Saving: You can directly install it on the roof, ground or outdoors, which makes it particularly suitable for water-scarce areas or places where cooling towers cannot be installed.
  • Easy Maintenance: The daily maintenance of our air cooled chiller mainly focuses on cleaning the condenser fins and inspecting the fan. You don’t need to deal with common problems in the cooling water system such as scale, algae and bacterial growth, and the maintenance workload is relatively small.

Disadvantages

  • Lower Energy Efficiency: Due to the fact that the heat exchange efficiency of air is much lower than that of water, the condensing temperature of air cooled chillers is higher, and the compressor needs to consume more power. Therefore, its energy efficiency ratio is much lower than that of water cooled chillers.
  • Affected by Environment: In the hot summer weather, its condensation effect will significantly decline, resulting in a decrease in cooling capacity and energy efficiency.
  • High Noise: Both the compressor and the fan are located in the outdoor unit, generating considerable noise during operation, which may have an impact on the surrounding environment. You need to consider the rationality of the installation location.

Comparisons Between Air Cooled Chillers and Water Cooled Chillers

Cooling Method

  • Air Cooled Chiller: It directly cools the refrigerant with ambient air through its own fan and finned condenser.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: It requires water to cool the water cooled condenser first, and then the heat of the cooling water is dissipated into the air through the cooling tower.

System Composition

  • Air Cooled Chiller: It is mainly composed of the main unit and the cooling water pump. All components are usually integrated into one, and the system composition is simple. Moreover, air cooled types usually employ screw or scroll compressors.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: Its system composition is complex, generally consisting of the main unit, cooling tower, cooling water pump and water treatment system. Moreover, water cooled types give priority to using centrifugal or screw compressors.

Initial Investment

  • Air Cooled Chiller: It does not require cooling towers, cooling water pumps or corresponding pipelines, so its installation project is simple and the cycle is short. Meanwhile, the initial investment is also relatively low.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: It requires additional cooling towers, cooling water pumps, water treatment equipment and complex piping systems, so its installation project is complicated and the corresponding cost is also higher.

Energy Efficiency

  • Air Cooled Chiller: Its air heat exchange efficiency is poor, resulting in high condensing temperature and relatively high power consumption of the compressor, so its energy efficiency is low. Its energy efficiency will further decline in high-temperature environments.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: The heat exchange efficiency of water is much higher than that of air. Its condensing temperature is low, and the power consumption of the compressor is small, so it has high energy efficiency. Especially in large-scale projects, its energy-saving advantages are significant.

Maintenance

  • Air Cooled Chiller: It only requires cleaning the condenser fins and inspecting the fan and compressor. There is no need to deal with water quality-related issues, making maintenance simple and convenient.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: In addition to the main unit, you also need to maintain the cooling tower, cooling water pump. In addition, you also need to carry out strict water quality treatment to prevent scaling, corrosion and algae growth. Otherwise, the efficiency of the chiller will drop sharply.

Installation Method

  • Air Cooled Chiller: You can directly install it on the roof, platform or ground. It is suitable for projects with limited space.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: Its main unit requires a dedicated machine room, and the cooling tower also needs to occupy space on the roof or ground,  which results in a large overall space occupation.

Noise

  • Air Cooled Chiller: Its compressor and high-volume fan are the main noise sources, and it discharges heat into the surrounding air, which may affect the adjacent environment.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: Its main unit is located in the machine room, and the noise of the cooling tower is relatively low. However, its cooling tower has problems with water evaporation loss and drift.

Application

  • Air Cooled Chiller: It is mainly applied in small and medium-sized buildings such as office buildings and hotels, as well as in water-scarce areas, projects with limited budgets or regions with limited installation space.
  • Water Cooled Chiller: It is mainly applied in large-scale construction and industrial projects, projects that pursue long-term energy conservation, or places with sufficient space.

How to Choose the Right Air Cooled Chiller?

Clarify Your Needs

You must precisely determine your cooling requirements through professional cooling load calculation and reserve approximately 10% to 20% of the design margin on this basis to ensure that our air cooled chillers can meet your cooling needs under different working conditions and avoid energy efficiency losses caused by improper capacity.

Evaluate the Environment

You need to investigate the ventilation conditions and extreme temperatures at the installation site. It is essential to ensure that the air cooled chiller has sufficient intake and exhaust space to prevent air flow short circuits. In addition, you need to verify its cooling capacity based on the local maximum ambient temperature to ensure that it can still operate stably under extreme weather conditions.

Examine Energy Efficiency and Noise

After meeting your cooling capacity requirements, you should give priority to choosing air cooled chillers with high comprehensive energy efficiency to achieve energy conservation. At the same time, for projects installed in noise-sensitive areas, you must strictly check the noise index of the chiller and select low-noise models or take corresponding sound insulation measures.

Select Configuration

Select the appropriate compressor type based on your required cooling capacity and operational characteristics, and pay attention to the energy regulation range of the air cooled chiller to enhance energy efficiency at partial loads. In addition, you also need to consider whether you have a large enough space to accommodate outdoor installation and whether there is an appropriate power connection.
