What is The Air Cooled Modular Chiller?
The air cooled modular chiller directly discharges the system heat into the air through a fan to complete the refrigeration cycle, without the need for additional cooling towers or cooling water systems.
This entire machine is composed of many independent module units. You can flexibly combine and expand them according to your actual cooling capacity requirements to achieve multi-level configuration from small loads to large central air conditioning systems.
Advantages of The Air Cooled Modular Chiller
Modular Design
Whether it is a low-load system in the early stage or capacity expansion in the later stage, its modular design enables you to achieve linear capacity expansion by adding modules without replacing the host system. This significantly reduces your investment cost.
Efficient Operation
Each module has an independent refrigeration circuit and electrical control unit. So when one module needs maintenance, the rest can continue to run. This partial redundancy structure effectively decreases your system downtime and keeps the refrigeration system continuously and stably outputs cooling capacity to satisfy the high reliability requirements under continuous operation conditions.
Easy to Install
Compared with water-cooled chillers, the air cooled chillers have no requirement for cooling towers, cooling water pumps or matching pipelines. Just complete the basic electrical wiring and pipeline connection to put the machine into use, which greatly simplifies your installation process and reduces the investment in supporting equipment.
Compact Structure
The equipment can be installed in either wall-mounted or floor-mounted options based on on-site conditions. Thanks to its flexible layout and a small footprint, it has become an ideal cooling solution for high-rise buildings, old renovation projects or places with limited space.

Low operating cost
Because no cooling water system is required, this machine does not need to clean the cooling tower, treat water quality or carry out anti-scaling maintenance. This offers you lower daily maintenance investment.
And its modular structure also makes it easier and faster to replace unit components, reducing maintenance time.
Environmental protection
The air cooled modular chiller adopts high-efficiency compressors and environmentally friendly refrigerants, which meets energy-saving standards and also reduces carbon emissions and environmental burdens.
Working Principle of Air Cooled Modular Chillers
Single-Module Cycle
- Compression: The compressor compresses low-pressure and low-temperature refrigerants drawn from the evaporator into high-pressure, high-temperature ones.
- Condensation: The high temperature and pressure refrigerant enters the condenser. At this time, the fan forces airflow to take over the condenser’s heat exchange tubes and removes heat from the refrigerant, which makes the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid. It releases absorbed heat and undergoes a phase change from gas to liquid.
- Expansion: After condensation, the expansion valve controls the high-pressure liquid refrigerant flow rate. It can rapidly decrease pressure and temperature and transform the refrigerant into a low temperature and pressure liquid.
- Evaporation: The low temperature and pressure refrigerant enters the evaporator, TO exchange heat with circulating water. After absorbing heat from the water, it vaporizes into low-pressure vapor to cool the water. And then, the refrigerant is then re-drawn into the compressor to begin the next cycle.
Multi-Module Coordination
In multi-module systems, the control system continuously monitors return water temperature, system load, and operational status in real time. It automatically adjusts the number of active modules based on cooling demand like activating additional modules when load increases.
Furthermore, the control system automatically balances running time across modules to avoid overwork in individual units, which can extend your equipment lifespan.
Types of Air Cooled Modular Chillers
Scroll Air Cooled Modular Chiller
The scroll air cooled modular chiller adopts high-efficiency scroll compressors. It features a compact structure, minimal vibration, and low operating noise (less than 75 dB) so that this equipment is particularly suitable for commercial buildings, small factories, hotels, and office complexes requiring quiet operation. And its modules can be equipped with electronic expansion valves and intelligent control systems for automatic throttling and capacity regulation, with single-module cooling capacities ranging from 5–30 RT.
You can flexibly parallel many modules to achieve multi-stage capacity output based on project cooling demands.
Screw Air Cooled Modular Chiller

The intelligent controller automatically allocates operating modules based on real-time system load to realize “on-demand cooling” and provide you high energy efficiency across varying load stages.
This architecture offers exceptional system redundancy and reliability, highly suitable for scenarios requiring 24/7 continuous operation.
Parts of the Air Cooled Modular Chiller
Compressor
The compressor serves as the core of the entire chiller system. It drives the circulation of refrigerant throughout the system, Common types include screw, scroll, reciprocating, rotary, and centrifugal compressors. It offers you high energy efficiency and reliability, capable of stable operation with a service life of 100,000 hours.
You should select the appropriate compressor type and quantity according to project scale and load characteristics.
Condenser
The condenser efficiently dissipates heat from the refrigerant into the surrounding air. And its structure typically is made of copper tubes and aluminum fins, with enhanced heat transfer design to maximize thermal efficiency. Fins often feature anti-corrosion coatings to keep its high heat exchange performance while extending its working time. You can select various fin arrangements such as V-shaped or parallel according to installation space requirements.
Fan
The fan provides forced air convection for the condenser and is a key component to ensure the efficiency of heat exchange. Industrial-grade air-cooled modular coolers typically employ high static pressure and low-noise axial flow fans.
Evaporator
The evaporator is the core component for transferring cooling capacity. It enables the refrigerant to absorb heat from water and evaporate, thus completing the refrigeration cycle.
Common configurations include shell and tube type, plate type and fin type. You can choose the appropriate evaporator as needed.
Expansion Valve
The expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow and pressure. It automatically adjusts its opening based on real-time load to maintain the pressure differential between the condenser and evaporator, ensuring optimal throttling, pressure reduction, and vaporization before refrigerant enters the evaporator.
If it is multi-module systems, electronic expansion valves are recommended for you to enable more precise load response and higher energy efficiency.
Control System
The machine utilizes an advanced PLC control system that monitors temperature and pressure in real time, automatically adjusts load and start or stop functions, and it can provide functions like fault alarms and energy efficiency optimization.
How to Select Air Cooled Modular Chiller
Cooling Capacity
Please ensure the unit’s total cooling capacity matches your project’s design load.
It is important you should reserve 10–15% cooling capacity after calculating the total cold load to accommodate high temperatures or unexpected conditions.
Operating Conditions
When you select unit models and quantities, you also need to consider the ambient temperature, humidity, and seasonal variations at the project location.
For regions with high summer temperatures, configuring high-efficiency condensers or enhanced air-cooling systems is a better choice for you to maintain rated output performance.
Refrigerant Type
Different application environments have specific refrigerant requirements.
For example, if environmentally friendly refrigerants are needed, it is recommended to choose low-GWP refrigerants like R410A or R32.
Energy Consumption
Coefficient of Performance (COP) and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) are key points to evaluate chiller efficiency. Higher values means stronger cooling capacity.
