By Cooling Method

The air-cooled printing chiller is an independent industrial cooling system that utilizes the surrounding air to dissipate the heat generated during 3D printing, without the need for external water sources or cooling towers.

The water-cooled printing chiller is an efficient, closed-loop cooling mechanism that utilizes water as the primary medium to absorb the heat generated during the 3D printing process and transfer it to an external cooling tower or an independent heat exchanger.
By Form Factor & Design

A packaged printing cooling system is a complete and independent industrial cooling device. It integrates all necessary components (including refrigeration, pumping, control units, and liquid storage tanks) within a closed enclosure that is factory-assembled.

The rack-mounted printing chiller is a compact cooling device specifically designed for installation in standard 19-inch equipment racks or cabinets. This design is mainly used in industrial or laboratory environments where space is limited.

The dual-cooling-circuit printing chiller is an industrial cooling system that integrates two independent refrigeration circuits within a single unit. These two circuits can operate independently, allowing them to provide different flow rates, pressures, and highly precise temperatures for different components of high-power 3D printers simultaneously.

Printing Chiller Uses
The printing chiller is indispensable among the numerous industrial additive manufacturing (3D printing) applications because these applications require precise temperature control to ensure print quality and protect sensitive equipment. Let’s learn more about its key uses across different 3D printing technologies.

The printing chiller is used to cool the ultraviolet light source (laser or light-emitting diode) to ensure stable power output and normal operation. It also helps maintain the precise temperature of the liquid photopolymer resin and the build platform to ensure proper curing and viscosity and prevent material deformation.

Powder-bed fusion processes such as SLS and SLM use high-power lasers, which generate a lot of heat. The printing chiller provides strong cooling for the laser source and optical components to maintain performance and prevent damage. It also assists in managing the overall temperature of the build chamber to ensure consistent material performance and part quality.

Some high-end industrial FDM equipment uses printing chillers to precisely control the temperature of the hot end/nozzle to prevent premature filament softening and ensure uniform extrusion of the material. They can also be used for part cooling in some industrial settings.

In some advanced processes, including MJF and EBM, the printing chiller cools the nozzles, lasers, or high-power electron beam guns to ensure efficient operation of the equipment and a stable build platform temperature.

The printing chiller ensures that the powerful lasers in SLS, SLM, and SLA machines can operate at optimal temperatures to prevent performance degradation or mode drift.

Motors, power supplies, and control boards in large industrial printers generate heat and require proper cooling provided by the printing chiller to prevent overheating.

In some integrated manufacturing lines, printing chillers are used to rapidly water-cool newly printed parts to remove them from the mold or prepare them for the subsequent manufacturing stage, thus maintaining the integrity of the design and accelerating production speed.

In traditional and digital printing industries, printing chillers can maintain optimal ink viscosity and paper humidity levels to ensure clear and consistent printing quality and prevent issues such as blurring or poor adhesion.

Why Does 3D Printing Need Chillers?
3D printers need to be equipped with a chiller to control the temperature-sensitive processes, which is crucial for ensuring the quality, speed of printing, and lifespan of the equipment.
Many 3D printing materials are extremely sensitive to temperature. Excessive temperature may cause those to soften and deform, have uneven crystallization or undergo degradation. Overheating will also keep the already printed part in a softened state. Excessive local temperature may cause the structure to sag or result in dimensional distortion. Chillers can maintain the temperature stability of the forming area through active temperature control, ensuring geometric accuracy.
In SLS or metal printing, the high-power laser operates for a long time, generating a large amount of heat. To maintain the constant temperature of the optical lenses and mirrors of the laser, as well as to prevent power fluctuations or damage to the optical components due to overheating, a chiller is necessary.
Besides, the moisture content of the paper design should be between 4.0% and 6.0%; a proper temperature can reduce the water loss.
Printing Chillers Operating Principles
The core objective of printing chillers is to maintain the temperatures of key components during the printing process within a predefined optimal range. They absorb the heat generated by the equipment through the circulation of coolant and discharge the heat into the external environment, while precisely regulating the temperature of the coolant.
The hot coolant is brought back with heat from the printing equipment and flows into the chiller. The compressor compresses the low-temperature and low-pressure refrigerant gas into a high-temperature and high-pressure gas. Then, the gas passes through a fan or is cooled by cold water, condensing into a medium-temperature and high-pressure liquid. The heat is released into the outside air. Throttle/Thermocouple: It throttles and reduces the pressure of the liquid refrigerant, converting it into a low-temperature and low-pressure mist-like mixture. The evaporator absorbs a large amount of heat from the cooling liquid flowing over its outer surface. After absorbing heat, the refrigerant turns back into a low-temperature and low-pressure gas and returns to the compressor to start the next cycle.

No, a fan can only provide limited air convection for cooling, and it is unable to achieve precise temperature control. It is impossible to solve the problems of resin viscosity changes or thermal stress in large parts.
To determine the cooling capacity, you can refer to the official technical specifications of the printer, or you can directly contact us or provide the printer model, printing materials, and environmental temperature to us, and we will calculate it for you.
For most industrial 3D printing chillers, the recommended coolant is a mixture of distilled water or deionized water and an inhibitor-type ethylene glycol solution. The coolant should be replaced regularly, typically every 6 to 12 months, depending on the usage and the condition of the liquid.
You can clean the printing chiller regularly by using compressed air or a soft brush to remove dust from the intake port and the radiator, and check if the coolant level is within the normal range and look for any signs of water leakage in the pipes. The coolant also needs to be replaced according to the specified cycle as per the manual.
The reasons for increased noise may be fan or radiator dust accumulation, a water pump sucking in air or experiencing cavitation, or compressor or fan bearing wear. If you are not sure, contact us and get help!
The printing chiller is a part of the printing system’s auxiliary equipment that consumes the most electricity, but its power consumption is much lower than that of the printer itself. Our modern efficient designs usually feature variable-frequency compressors and standby/economy modes: once the set temperature is reached, the compressor reduces its power output or stops running, only keeping the water pump in circulation, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption.
To ensure the best heat dissipation and operational performance, the installation location of the printing chiller should leave sufficient space, stay away from other heat sources and ensure good air circulation. The chiller must be placed horizontally on a solid surface to avoid vibration and noise. Try to place it in a place with less dust and oil stains to prevent dust from blocking the radiator.
