What is the Magnetic Chiller?

A magnetic chiller is an advanced cooling device that uses the magnetic refrigeration effect to affect the temperature of materials. Compared to other chillers, it operates without compressors or refrigerants and utilises magnetic field changes to achieve cooling. As a result, it has lower energy losses and is more environmentally friendly. You can use it in a variety of industries such as consumer goods, the medical field, the industrial field, and the commercial field.

Components of a Magnetic Chiller

Magnetic Material

Magnetic material is a crucial component of a magnetic chiller, serving as a refrigerant similar to that of a traditional chiller, but it is typically solid. It requires an external magnetic field to be applied to change its temperature during operation, and it will warm up when magnetised and cool down when demagnetised. You can use a variety of magnetic materials such as gadolinium, ferromanganese, iron-rhodium, cerium, and others.

Magnet System

The Magnet System is responsible for generating a magnetic field to change the temperature of the magnetic material during operation. It is usually variable and cycles through magnetisation and demagnetisation during operation. There are three types of magnets to choose from: permanent magnets, superconducting magnets, and electromagnets. Permanent magnets are commonly used in small cooling loads, while superconducting magnets allow for stronger magnetic fields for larger projects. Electromagnets require an electric current to generate a magnetic field.

Heat Exchanger

A heat exchanger contains components such as a pump, heat exchange fluid, cold end heat exchanger, and hot end heat exchanger that work together to exchange heat during operation. It is cooled and dissipated by pumps that drive the heat exchange fluid (e.g., water) to absorb and carry heat and transport it to the outside environment.

How Magnetic Chillers Work?

  • Magnetisation: When you run a magnetic chiller, the magnet system generates a strong magnetic field and the magnetic material is pushed into the field. As a result of the magnetic field, the magnetic material becomes an ordered arrangement of magnetic moments and heats up rapidly.
  • Heat Dissipation: The cold end of the heat exchange fluid flows quickly to the hot magnetic material and absorbs the heat quickly. After absorbing the heat, the high-temperature heat exchange liquid flows to the heat exchanger at the hot end to exchange heat with the external environment to achieve heat dissipation.
  • Demagnetisation: The cooled magnetic material is then removed from the magnetic field, which further reduces the temperature, resulting in a lower temperature. The dissipated heat exchange fluid then flows from the hot end to the magnetic material, where it is further cooled to form an ice-cold liquid.
  • Heat Exchange: The cold heat exchange fluid will flow to the area you need to cool, exchanging heat with the heat source to achieve cooling. The heat exchange fluid also returns to ambient temperature and proceeds to the next cycle.

Advantages of Magnetic Chillers

Environmentally Friendly

The refrigerant in conventional chillers may contain various harmful compounds that are discharged into the environment after use, causing environmental hazards. Whereas magnetic chillers do not require any harmful chemicals, nor do they produce emissions while working. This makes it an ideal choice for environmentally friendly cooling.

Low Energy Loss

Magnetic chiller mainly relies on the change of magnetic field to achieve cooling, the magnetic energy is directly converted into heat without the use of a compressor. Therefore, it is possible to achieve high cooling efficiency with very little energy loss, increasing energy efficiency by approximately 30%, thus reducing your energy costs.

Low Noise Level

Magnetic chillers do not require the use of components such as compressors and operate with few moving parts. This results in less vibration and noise, allowing you to use them in noise-sensitive projects and providing a more comfortable environment for your employees or customers.

Simple Maintenance

Thanks to the absence of constant stress and fewer moving parts, magnetic chillers are less prone to wear and damage. This not only makes it easier to maintain but also extends its service life, making it more cost-effective for you.

Compact

Magnetic chillers are designed to be more compact and therefore smaller and lighter, allowing you to use them where space is at a premium. You can also easily integrate them into existing equipment. In addition, this lighter construction makes it easier to install and maintain.

Are Magnetic Chillers costly?

Magnetic chillers have a high initial cost, but they are worth the investment and are cost-effective. Firstly, it offers better energy efficiency than traditional chillers, saving you money on energy costs, and secondly, its low noise level and stable operation improve efficiency. In addition, it requires less maintenance and reduces downtime damage.

Is the Cooling Effect the Same for Different Magnetic Materials?

Different magnetic materials have different magnetic coefficients, which result in different cooling effects. The coefficient of magnetic heat reflects the degree of temperature change of the magnetic material under the action of the magnetic field, and the magnetic material with a higher coefficient of magnetic heat has a higher cooling efficiency. In addition, different magnetic materials have different operating temperatures. You need to consider the material properties, the application and your budget to make a choice.

Do Magnetic Chillers Emit Radiation When They are in Operation?

Magnetic chillers are very safe and do not produce harmful X-rays or nuclear radiation while in operation. It uses a lower strength magnetic field, similar to the level of radiation found in most electronic devices. However, you need to be careful when using it so that certain delicate equipment is not in proximity, such as pacemakers

Is the Heat Exchange Fluid for Magnetic Chillers Environmentally Friendly?

Magnetic chillers usually use water or aqueous glycol solutions as heat exchange fluids, which are not very harmful. They are safely sealed in the heat exchanger, so that even if leakage occurs, these heat exchange fluids are not harmful to the environment.

Can Magnetic Chillers Produce Heat?

Magnetic materials will repeatedly heat up and cool down in magnetisation and demagnetisation. Heat production can be achieved by adjusting the cooling process and exchanging the heat it produces for heat exchange
