Air-Cooled Screw Chiller and Water-Cooled Screw Chiller
According to the difference of the object of transferring refrigerant heat dissipation, there are air-cooled screw chillers and water-cooled screw chillers. They have the same mechanism of action and both have an evaporator, a screw compressor, a condenser and an expansion valve.
- Air-Cooled Screw Chiller: Air-cooled screw chillers dissipate heat through ambient air. It needs to be equipped with a fan, which blows ambient air onto the exposed condenser tube during operation, so that the refrigerant vapour reaching the condenser tube exchanges heat with the ambient air to dissipate heat. It is compact, easier to install and maintain, and ideal for water-scarce projects. However, its high dependence on the external environment makes it perform poorly at higher ambient temperatures
- Water-Cooled Screw Chillers: The refrigerant in a water-cooled screw chiller radiates heat to water in the condenser. Therefore, it needs to be equipped with a cooling tower that stores the water. This makes it a larger structure and more complex to install and maintain. But thanks to the higher heat transfer efficiency of water, the water-cooled screw chiller has a higher cooling efficiency and is not affected by ambient air. And, because no fan is required, it runs more quietly.

Closed, Semi-hermetic and Open Screw Chiller
According to the connection between motor and screw compressor, screw chillers can be divided into closed, semi-closed and open screw chillers.
- Open Screw Chillers: The compressor and motor of an open screw chiller are mounted separately and connected by a coupling. The open design makes it easier to install and maintain, but also makes it more susceptible to external environmental erosion.
- Semi-Hermetic Screw Chillers: The motor and compressor of a semi-hermetic screw chiller are mounted together in a closed housing that can be opened. It is widely used because it combines the easy maintenance of an open screw chiller with the reliability of a closed screw chiller.
- Hermetic Screw Chiller: The motor and compressor of a hermetic screw chiller are sealed in a completely closed and unopenable shell. It completely eliminates the influence of the external environment and prevents the leakage of refrigerant and lubricating oil, providing excellent reliability.
Reliable Certification
Meeting worldwide safety regulations, the screw chillers ensure long-term dependable performance for commercial and industrial cooling systems.

Texas Petrochemical Plant, USA

A petrochemical plant in Texas needed to provide continuous cooling for reaction vessels. The local summer temperature reached 46℃. The project used an 80-ton air-cooled screw chiller, without a cooling tower, and discharged heat directly into the air. The core component of the unit was the screw chiller compressor, with few moving parts, making it suitable for long-term continuous operation. After the screw chiller was put into use, the temperature of the reaction vessels was stable, and the customer considered the air-cooled screw chiller solution very practical in water-deficient areas.
German Automotive Parts Factory

A German automotive parts factory needed to add 200 tons of cooling capacity. The original centrifugal chiller’s efficiency decreased under partial load. After comparing screw chiller vs centrifugal chiller, the customer chose a 200-ton water-cooled screw chiller, with a cooling tower for operation. The unit could be stably regulated within the 50%–100% load range, meeting the needs of different production lines. This project proved that the medium-large water-cooled screw chiller solution is also reliable under partial load conditions.
Vietnam Electronic Factory Injection Molding Workshop

A Vietnamese electronic factory’s injection molding workshop needed to provide cooling for multiple pieces of equipment, with a cooling capacity of approximately 120 tons. The customer initially considered multiple vane compressors, but after comparing screw chiller vs scroll chiller, they ultimately chose a 120-ton water-cooled screw chiller. The screw compressor is suitable for long-term high-load operation, and centralized supply of cooling by a single unit is also convenient for management. After the equipment was put into use, the temperature of the injection molds was stable, and the customer was satisfied with the operational performance.
Middle East Commercial Complex

A commercial complex in the Middle East is located in a high-temperature area and needs to provide 150 tons of cooling capacity for the air conditioning system. The project selected a 150-ton air-cooled screw chiller, without a cooling tower. Regarding the customer’s question about the working principle of the screw chiller, we explained: The screw compressor continuously compresses the refrigerant through the engagement of rotors to achieve stable cooling. The unit can operate continuously at 45℃ and meets the cooling requirements of the commercial complex during summer.

What is the Screw Chiller?
The difference between screw chillers and other chillers is the use of a screw compressor to compress the refrigerant gas. Screw compressors use two intermeshing rotors instead of impellers, which rotate at high speeds during operation. As a result, it gives screw chillers excellent efficiency, smooth and continuous operation, and lower noise levels. You can use them in a variety of projects such as industrial manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceutical and more.
How Screw Chillers Achieve Cooling?
Evaporation
Immediately after you run the screw chiller through the control panel, the pump delivers water to the area to be cooled, exchanging heat with the heat source. The water carrying the heat then enters the evaporator to start the cycle. The refrigerant in the evaporator will rapidly absorb the heat from the water, cooling it. The re-cooled water will again be recovered for heat exchange with an external heat source, and the refrigerant liquid after absorbing the heat will change to a gaseous state
Compression
A screw compressor powers the refrigerant cycle. The refrigerant is converted to a gaseous state at low pressure. The two rotors of the screw compressor rotate to draw in the refrigerant gas and compress it in the middle of the rotors, transforming it into a high-pressure state and helping it to enter the condenser smoothly.
Condensation
The refrigerant gas entering the condenser exchanges heat with air or water to dissipate heat quickly. Air-cooled screw chillers exchange heat with ambient air, while water-cooled screw chillers exchange heat with chilled water in a cooling tower. The cooled refrigerant recondenses to a liquid state.
Expansion
Refrigerant that has been recondensed to liquid state is under high pressure and it is difficult to absorb heat again. The expansion valve is responsible for converting it to a low-temperature, low-pressure state, which ensures efficient heat exchange again in the next cycle. The expansion valve also automatically adjusts the refrigerant flow according to the current cooling load. The refrigerant enters the evaporator again for the next cycle.
Advantages of Screw Chillers
High Energy Efficiency
Screw chillers maximise cooling with less power, thus reducing power consumption and saving you energy costs. Water-cooled screw chillers, in particular, offer even better energy efficiency. This can be cost-effective for your large-scale projects. You can also equip your screw chillers with variable frequency drives to reduce unnecessary energy losses at low cooling demands.
Outstanding Temperature Control
The screw chiller’s screw compressor provides consistent operation, reducing temperature fluctuations and enabling precise temperature control. Thanks to this, it safeguards laboratories and industrial manufacturing where temperature control is critical.
Durability
Screw chillers have fewer moving parts, which reduces friction and increases durability. And you can achieve a longer service life by choosing stronger materials for your screw chiller.
In addition, it runs reliably, reduces or even eliminates downtime, and can handle the challenges of constant work. This makes it the ideal choice for your cooling solutions in harsh industrial environments.
Flexible Control
Firstly, the screw chiller is equipped with an advanced control system, with sophisticated sensors and a user-friendly interactive interface that allows you to make adjustments and carry out real-time monitoring at any time. Secondly, the screw chiller can be modularised, so you can expand it at any time according to changes in demand to respond flexibly to a variety of needs.
Low Noise level
Compared to other chillers (such as centrifugal chillers), the screw chiller generates less noise from vibration during operation. So it creates a more comfortable environment for your customers or employees, resulting in improved operations and productivity. You can use it in sound-sensitive projects.
Screw chillers have a lifespan of about 10 to 20 years. However, this time needs to vary depending on the environment in which it is used and the level of maintenance. Screw chillers used in harsh environments and under high loads for long periods of time will have a reduced lifespan. Whereas regular maintenance (e.g. cleaning, lubrication and servicing) will extend its life.
Variable frequency drives can in some cases be effective in saving energy losses and thus reducing energy costs. For projects with frequently fluctuating cooling loads, the use of variable frequency drives allows for more precise temperature control and reduces unnecessary energy consumption. If your screw chiller is often running at less than full load, with long runtimes at partial loads, a variable frequency drive will save you a lot of energy costs.
CFM reflects the capacity of the screw compressor in a screw chiller and refers to cubic feet per minute. It represents the volume of air that the screw compressor can move per minute. You can choose a CFM that matches the needs of your application. Too small a CFM will cause the compressor to run at high loads, affecting the service life and cooling effectiveness of the screw chiller, while too large a CFM will result in unnecessary energy loss.
In contrast to screw chillers, centrifugal chillers use centrifugal compressors that compress refrigerant gas by centrifugal force. They both provide efficient cooling and withstand medium to large cooling loads. Whereas centrifugal chillers offer greater energy efficiency, screw chillers are simpler to maintain and have a lower initial cost.
Screw chillers and scroll chillers use different compressors, which in turn cause them to perform differently. The scroll chiller has fewer operating components, which makes it less noisy and vibratory and more durable. However, it has a smaller capacity and is better suited for cooling smaller projects. Screw chillers are more costly but can meet your high cooling loads, high frequency and continuous use.
