Provide Reliable Cooling for High Heat-Density Server Rooms

To achieve a reliable cooling performance in high-density server rooms, Chillerone server room chillers employ liquid-based cooling architectures such as chilled water loops, direct-to-chip cold plates, or immersion systems, etc. These architectures have much higher thermal conductivity than simply using air, enabling the efficient removal of intense and concentrated heat. We also use variable-speed compressors to dynamically adapt to the fluctuating heat load. To prevent urgent failures in high-density environments, our server room chillers are equipped with redundant components. Besides, we apply advanced monitoring sensors to detect any problems before they occur.

Low Energy Consumption to Reduce Long-Term Cost

Chillerone server room chillers achieve low energy consumption and long-term cost reduction by adopting variable speed technology and energy-saving modes. Our energy-efficient server room chiller reduces output during off-peak hours or when the IT workload is low by installing Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) on compressors, fans, and water pumps. The annual energy consumption may be lowered by 30% to 50%. Besides, we design the chiller to bypass mechanical refrigeration and use the cool surrounding air or water for cooling, which achieves low-power-consumption server room cooling and greatly reduces server room cooling operating costs. Furthermore, we apply advanced automation technology to optimize set values and perform preventive maintenance.

Compact Design for Space-Limited Server Rooms

In order to adapt to space-limited server rooms and free up floor space for server racks, our chillers apply a compact design. They adopt a vertical modular and integrated component solution to maximize the cooling capacity per square foot. We offer options of “narrow-type” enclosures, microchannel heat exchangers, and variable-frequency-driven scroll compressors that have a smaller size than traditional centrifugal models to save space. Moreover, many designs integrate pumps, expansion tanks, and controllers into a plug-and-play cabinet, reducing the overall footprint of the cooling infrastructure.

Server Room Chiller vs Precision Air Conditioner: Which One is Better for My Server Room?

For server room cooling, a specialized chiller is no doubt better. Standard air conditioning systems are designed to meet human comfort requirements. They usually do not operate 24 hours a day. While a server room chiller is specially designed for dry heat from electronics and is able to operate continuously. Besides, an air conditioner cannot handle continuous high-intensity heat loads or provide the precise humidity control necessary to prevent static electricity or condensation.

How Much Redundancy do I Actually Need?

For mission-critical data, the common industry standard is N+1. For “Tier IV” data centers, the industry standard is 2N redundancy, which refers to two completely independent cooling systems.

How to Handle a Power Outage?

To reduce the loss caused by a power outage, it’s better for you to choose a server room chiller with a “rapid startup” function. Standard chillers take about 15 minutes to restart, while the chillers specifically designed for servers can fully cool down within 90 seconds to prevent thermal failures of the servers.

Can the Server Room Chiller Control Humidity?

The server room chiller can be used in conjunction with Precision Air Handling Units (PAHUs) or CRAHs to control humidity. Humidification can prevent static discharge, and dehumidification helps prevent corrosion. Our chillers can stably maintain the best humidity (40-60%) for your server rooms.

How to Conduct Daily Maintenance?

It is recommended to inspect the server room chiller at least once every quarter. include checking the refrigerant level, cleaning the condenser coils, testing the water chemical indicators, and confirming the calibration status of the temperature sensors. We always provide remote instructions or on-site maintenance.

How Does a Server Room Chiller Work?

When operating, the server room chiller absorbs the heat through a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. In the beginning, the server room chiller pumps a glycol mixture to Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAHs) or other cooling units. Then the warm liquid mixture returns to the chiller’s evaporator. The heat is transferred to a refrigerant and turned into a low-pressure gas. The compressor pressurizes the gas to raise its temperature, and then the condenser can release the heat into the ambient air or a cooling tower. Finally, the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant are dropped through the expansion to restart the cycle.

Why Do You Need a Server Room Chiller?

A server room chiller is not just about cooling. It also prevents equipment downtime, protects the hardware, and ensures continuous and stable IT systems. In many conditions, the absence of a server room chiller can lead to various problems.

Server Outage

Without a dedicated cooling chiller in the server room, heat will accumulate rapidly within the enclosed server space. Servers are extremely sensitive to temperature, so a short period of overheating can cause server downtime or system instability.

Shorter Lifespan of Hardware

A standard air conditioning system is unable to maintain precise temperature stability. However, frequent temperature fluctuations will accelerate the aging of components, and the servers, switches, and storage systems may fail earlier than expected.

Hot Spots

Uneven airflow and temperature distribution will lead to local hot spots developing around high-density racks, which can cause unpredictable thermal stress on critical equipment.

Unpredictable Breakdown

Without the intelligent monitoring and alarm system in the server room chiller, failures are often overlooked. When temperature alerts at the server level are triggered, serious damage may have already been caused.

Higher Energy Consumption and Operating Costs

Energy costs will continue to rise because of the lack of efficient heat exchange. As time goes by, the cooling system may become one of the largest long-term operating expenses in the server room.

High Expansion costs

Without the scalable cooling system solution, future server expansion will require replacing the entire system, which is costly and can cause disruptions.

How to Choose a Server Room Chiller?

Selecting the appropriate server room chiller requires a comprehensive assessment of the total cooling load and rack density of your facility. The chiller must comply with your current heat output and can leave room for future expansion. The built-in redundancy (such as N+1 compressors) and variable speed technology are important to be included.

Except for the cooling capacity, you need to consider the types of the chiller. For example, an air cooling system is suitable for simple, water-free installations, and a water cooling system is applicable for large-scale operations with excellent energy efficiency.

Your geographic climate also has an influence. It decides whether the server room chiller can utilize the surrounding temperature to reduce energy consumption. And take care that its physical size needs to match your available floor or roof space.

If you are not sure how to make a choice, contact us to get a tailored recommendation for you.

How to Determine the Size of the Server Room Chiller?

To determine the cooling capacity of the server room air conditioner, you must conduct a server room chiller capacity calculation to calculate the total heat load, which is the sum of all the heat generated within that area. This includes the heat from IT equipment, facility infrastructure, room surface area, the size, position, and obstructions of the window, lighting, and people. Each of them needs a detailed calculation. Convert the result to chiller capacity, and finally, never forget to increase the final capacity by 10% to 20% to accommodate future equipment expansion and sudden temperature rises in the environment.

Considering the complexity and the strict standard of food safety, the best and easiest way is to communicate with our engineering experts, who use professional software and profound experience to precisely calculate the load, ensuring that the final cooling system complies with all operational and regulatory standards.
