DWC Chiller Applications

DWC chillers can be used in large-scale vertical cannabis cultivation. They keep the root zone thermally balanced even under powerful grow lights, protecting steady cannabis development over time and preventing the occurrence of root diseases.

Chillerone DWC chillers are designed specifically for the DWC system that can be used for growing lettuce, basil, and other leafy vegetables. The precise nutrient solution temperature is essential to maintaining root system health and shortened growth timelines.

We offer DWC chillers designed specifically for indoor grow environments where air circulation is restricted and the heat load is high. They provide stable and dependable thermal control for the nutrient reservoir throughout the entire growth cycle.

DWC chillers are ideal for application in greenhouses because exposure to sunlight and surrounding conditions can lead to unstable water temperatures, thus ensuring the stable cooling of the root area.

DWC technology can be combined with the nursery pond. In this case, the DWC chiller is engineered to keep the water at stable temperatures of the biological floc system, providing the most secure starting point for the growth of seedlings, significantly improving the survival rate and uniformity of the seedlings.
Strict Quality Control
All raw materials entering the production line are strictly inspected to ensure they meet industrial standards, and we use advanced testing equipment to monitor whether each step meets the predetermined quality standards.
After each operation is completed, multiple functional tests and inspections are conducted on components and finished products, such as pressure tests and temperature cycling tests, to ensure the safety and reliability of the products.

What is a DWC Chiller?
A DWC (Deep Water Culture) chiller is a specially designed water cooling system used to regulate the temperature of the nutrient solution in a Deep Water Culture (DWC) hydroponic system. During DWC growth, even a slight temperature fluctuation can reduce the oxygen level, resulting in a negative impact on plant growth.
Unlike general industrial chillers, the DWC chiller must be designed to operate continuously under high humidity conditions and handle nutrient-rich water of your DWC root zone. To achieve this, our DWC chillers are specifically designed for hydroponic applications, providing precise temperature control and reliable 24/7 cooling to support high-yield DWC operations in grow rooms and greenhouses. By maintaining the water in the root zone within the optimal temperature range, Chillerone DWC chillers help to maintain the dissolved oxygen level, promote healthy root development, and prevent various problems such as oxygen depletion and root rot, giving long-term reliability for commercial DWC growing projects.
How Does a DWC Chiller Support Your Hydroponic Systems?
The DWC chiller operates based on the principle of the vapor compression refrigeration cycle.
First, the warm nutrient solution from the hydroponic system is pumped out through the evaporator, and the liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the water, turning it into a low-pressure, low-temperature gas. The compressor will increase the pressure and temperature of this gas significantly. Then, high-temperature and high-pressure gas flows into the condenser, which acts as another heat exchanger. During this process, the refrigerant releases the accumulated heat into the surrounding environment.
As the heat dissipates, the refrigerant recondenses into a high-pressure liquid state. The high-pressure liquid refrigerant flows through the expansion valve, which causes its pressure and temperature to drop rapidly, which prepares the refrigerant to enter the evaporator again, thus beginning the next cycle.
In this way, the DWC chiller transfers the heat energy from the warm nutrient solution to the cooler external environment, maintaining a constant and ideal temperature in the DWC system.
What’s more, the built-in digital controller monitors the water temperature and automatically controls the opening and closing of the compressor to maintain the set temperature point, ensuring the stable temperature required for your plant growth.
Why Do You Need a DWC Chiller?
To Prevent Root Diseases
An increase in water temperature reduces the dissolved oxygen content and increases the risk of diseases such as root rot. The DWC chiller can control the water temperature within a safe range to protect the health of the roots.
Maintain a Stable Dissolved Oxygen Level
Water temperature directly affects the content of dissolved oxygen and influences the supply of oxygen. A DWC chiller helps maintain a stable oxygen level, promoting healthier and more adaptable root growth.
Avoid Temperature Fluctuations in High-Load Systems
Multiple water tanks, high-power lighting equipment, and continuous operation can lead to rapid temperature changes, and a DWC chiller can stabilize the water temperature and ensure stable system performance even under peak load conditions.
Reduce Human Intervention and System Risks
Without a chiller, growers often need to make manual adjustments due to the lack of precise temperature control. With an automatic DWC chiller, your need for human effort and operational risks is reduced.

In most cases, using the DWC chiller is the most effective cooling method to maintain the ideal temperature range of 65°F to 72°F (18°C to 22°C) for your root zone, which maximizes dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and prevents the growth of harmful pathogens such as root rot. That means, it’s highly recommended to install chillers, especially for grow rooms whose temperature is above 65-68°F.
The size (cooling capacity) of the DWC chiller is decided by the total water consumption, ambient temperature, heat generated by lighting and pumps, and the target water temperature. Strictly, it needs a professional heat load calculation. The basic formula is: Required cooling capacity (kW) = Water volume (liters) × Temperature difference × Coefficient / Time. The easiest way is to contact us, and our experienced team will calculate it for you.
We do not recommend that because not all industrial chillers are suitable for DWC applications. DWC chillers require materials compatible with the nutrient solution, stable low-temperature control, and corrosion-resistant components. Chillers specifically designed for DWC are engineered to operate reliably in agricultural environments and can support long-term water quality assurance.
The installation position of the DWC chiller should be well-ventilated. It’s recommended to choose the area outside the main planting tent or room. Air-cooled chillers will disperse heat, so placing the equipment outside the warm planting space can prevent the surrounding environment temperature from rising. Our sales consultant will recommend the best model and installation location based on your site layout.
Usually, a chiller needs a submersible or external pump, with a flow rate sufficient to allow water to circulate within the cooler and return to the system. The user manual we provide will indicate the recommended GPH range for you.
To install the pipes, we will connect one hose from the pump’s outlet to the cooler’s inlet, and then connect another hose from the cooler’s outlet back to the water storage container or the planting tank. Finally, we will inspect if all the connections are fixed with hose clamps to prevent leakage.
We recommend you check and clean the filter monthly, ensure the chemical properties of the water are appropriate to prevent scaling in the system, and conduct a leak test annually.
Yes. If the total water volume and heat load of the chiller are both within the cooling capacity range of the unit, then one chiller can simultaneously provide cooling services for multiple water tanks. Reasonable pipeline design and flow control are crucial for ensuring that all water tanks receive uniform cooling.
If the DWC chiller does not work well, you can check if the set temperature is right, and inspect the vents and filters to see if they need cleaning. The adequacy of the water flow would also lead to the pump and hose being bent or clogged. Besides, ensure there is sufficient space (12-24 inches) around the equipment to dissipate heat. Of course, you can contact us directly, and our engineers will provide professional advice to you.
The chiller will generate noise when the compressor is running. You can place the DWC chiller outside of the growing area or use a remote installation method to alleviate this issue. Chillerone can also provide some models with lower noise.
Our DWC chillers are made with stainless steel water tanks, stainless steel pumps, and food-grade materials for all components that come into contact with water, which can help prevent corrosion, contamination, and performance degradation over time.
